There were no free lunches, however no one went hungry. If you could not afford the 20 cents for a hot lunch ( lovingly prepared by Aunt Lura and Aunt Agnes) You could bring in produce or livestock to donate to the lunchroom. About once a month a family with 4 or 6 kids i cant remember which would send a crate full of live chickens to school. ( The ride on the school bus was interesting.)
This was their barter in lieu of money for the lunches. It fell on the 7th and 8th grade boys to butcher the flock at morning recess. This we did without hesitation because my aunts could do wonders with FRESH fried chicken and hot biscuits.
We had great times playing cowboys in the woods. You could go as far as time would allow in the woods behind the school. However never go into the woods in front of the school That is where the principal was rumored to have a moonshine still with my uncle..That's a story for another time.
Teaching 2.0 then was a two room school. Things have changed. As I enter the classroom I can hardly wait to use the material I have been exposed to via the web in the past few days.
Image hitting a couple of keys and transporting the class anywhere in the world, letting them see how things were. letting them use an array of technology to learn as opposed to chalkboards, torn up books that the city schools had abandoned, and the library books when the teacher had time to drive to town to check them out.
What does 2.0 mean to me its like a three year old seeing Disneyland for the first time and exclaiming
"Daddy can I build a castle like that on the farm"
